Easy Backpacking Oatmeal Recipe

I grew up in New England where people take oatmeal pretty seriously. It brings back memories of cold winter mornings and fresh maple syrup. Hence oatmeal is one of the best ways for me to start a morning in the woods. The nice thing about oatmeal is that you can add almost anything you want. On the trail, I tend to stick with dried fruits, nuts, and brown sugar (don’t be shy with the sugar). Some of my favorite dried fruit to add are craisens, cherries, and apples. If I am feeling fancy, then I may add spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg. Once I have all of the ingredients ready, I dump them into a sandwich bag and hit the trails. In the morning I boil some water and then stir in all of the ingredients until it gets the right consistency. Bon appetit!

  • 1 cup of instant oatmeal
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons dried fruit
  • 2 tablespoons nuts
  • dash of cinnamon or nutmeg

Instructions: Combine all ingredients into a ziploc bag. In the morning, bring a cup of water to a boil. Put the dry ingredients in a bowl and slowly add the hot water until the oatmeal is the desired consistency. Stir the oatmeal and let sit for one minute to let the oats cook.
