Oktoberfest in a Pot

Autumn camping calls for comfort food and we have created the perfect camping recipe to satisfy all of your Oktoberfest cravings. This meal is filled with classic German foods including bratwurst, cabbage, and potatoes. Hopefully you have spent the day crushing some serious miles because this hearty meal is loaded with delicious calories.  Best of all the entire meal can be cooked in one pot!

The first time we cooked this meal was on a short camping trip to Horse Pasture Road on an October weekend. We spent the day hiking and leaf-peaping in the Jocassee Gorges. That night we found a campsite along the dirt road, cracked open a couple of pilsner beers, and savored this delicious meal. It is the perfect Oktoberfest camping recipe. Prost!

Oktoberfest Camping Recipe


  • Cooked Bratwurst (1 or 2 per person)
  • Potato (1 per person)
  • Cabbage (1 c per person)
  • 2 clove garlic
  • Pepper
  • Salt



At home: Chop cabbage into two inch pieces. Dice potatoes into one inch cubes. Mince the garlic. Combine cabbage, potato and garlic in a Tupperware and add salt and pepper to taste.

At camp: Bring 2 cups of water to a boil. While the water is boiling, slice the bratwurst. Once water is boiling, add the potatoes and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients and simmer for 5-10 more minutes.
